Unique Montana Cabins | The Hohnstead
Experience glamping near Missoula on 100 private acres. Our adults-only retreat features five hand-built, secluded forest cabins designed for stargazing and silence.
Tucked into 100 forested acres just 25 minutes from Missoula, The Hohnstead is a quiet, adults-only glamping retreat in western Montana.
Five hand-built, pet-friendly cabins.
No crowds.
No rush.
Just trees.
Fresh air.
And space that asks nothing from you.
Built and hosted by us
The Hohnstead isn’t a resort.
It’s our home place — shaped slowly from once off-grid land into a small forest retreat.
We built each cabin board by board, season by season. Not perfectly. Intentionally.
Simple spaces.
Soft light.
Woodsmoke.
A place to unplug. To rest. To feel yourself again beneath the noise.
If you’re curious how bare land became this quiet corner of Montana, our story lives on the About page.
The Rhythm Here
At The Hohnstead, we prioritize the sound of the wind over the glow of a screen. Whether you are stargazing from a mechanical wall in the Stargazer or seeking a pet-friendly forest escape in the Ranch Hand, our property is a sanctuary from the noise. These aren't just Montana cabin rentals; they are hand-built portals to the wild.
Our Hand-Built Sanctuaries
After a day of hiking near Missoula, return to the warmth of the Commons before retreating to your specific sanctuary. Whether you’ve chosen the stargazing views of The Stargazer or the secluded forest atmosphere of the Ranch Hand, the path back is lit only by the moon.
The Stargazer: "An open-air stargazing cabin with a button-operated wall."
The Ranch Hand: "The newest forest retreat with forest views on three sides."
The Shed: "Our climate-controlled garden cabin with Aircon and AC power."
The Blind: “A hand-built lookout for mountain views from your pillow."
The A-frame: "A minimalist rope-operated A-frame cabin near Missoula."
Shared Rituals and Amenities
While our unique Montana cabins provide a private refuge, the Commons serves as the communal heart of the property. Here, the 'Silence First' philosophy guides every interaction—from the steam rising off the two-seater hot tub to the crackle of a morning fire. It is a space designed for those who appreciate modern glamping amenities like solar-powered showers and a full guest kitchen, without the noise of the outside world.

Common Curiosities
-
We are tucked into 100 acres of quiet forest, just 25 minutes from the heart of Missoula, 15 minutes from the KettleHouse Amphitheater, and 35 minutes from MSO. It is close enough to the city for a local beer, but far enough to hear the wind in the pines.
-
Absolutely. We designed our resort as a "digital sanctuary" to help you unplug from the noise of constant notifications. While we have Wi-Fi in the communal Commons area for essentials, our unique cabins are intentionally off-grid, allowing you to trade screen time for the rhythmic sounds of the Montana forest.
-
Absolutely. We believe a nature getaway is only complete when the whole family is included, which is why we have no breed or size restrictions. We’ve welcomed everyone from Baxter the Greyhound to tiny Chihuahuas to our 100-acre Missoula retreat. To keep things simple, we charge a single small pet fee for your entire stay rather than a nightly rate. We allow a maximum of two pets per cabin, and we simply ask that they are well-behaved around humans and other dogs to protect the "silence first" experience for all our guests.
-
Yes. With 100 acres and five handcrafted cabins, we are an ideal setting for intimate group retreats or a creative unplug. Whether you’re hosting a wellness workshop or a small team reset, our "Silence First" philosophy provides the mental clarity needed for deep connection and inspired work.

To keep our footprint light, we share a centrally located outdoor restroom, solar showers, and a two-seater hot tub (available by sign-up for private soaking). The Commons serves as our communal kitchen and lounge—a place to gather before retreating back to the silence of your own cabin.
