Let the Hohnstead’s peaceful nature retreat help!
Our 100 acres of lush, Montana forest are perfect for your next summer vacation, whether you want to just hang out in your hammock or sightsee some nearby waterfalls and float the gorgeous Blackfoot River (which was the inspiration for Norman Maclean’s “The River Runs Through It” and Robert Redford’s film of the same name).
Here are a few reasons why our guests love staying and returning to The Hohnstead:

More information to help make your stay more memorable:
We only open our rustic, wooden doors from early May to late September, but we always encourage early bookings. Remember, early bird gets the worm!
Most of our cabins The Shanty, A-frame, The Blind are OFF GRID (The Ranch Hand is AC powered) and there are certain concessions that we make in order to live on such a beautiful piece of property as this:
A solar shower facility is available and depends largely on the weather conditions. It is outdoors, which means that THE SHOWER HEATS UP FROM THE SUN. We understand that it’s not for everyone, but in Montana at 4,000 ft elevation, water and electricity are prized commodities.
The bathroom is an outdoor enclosed unit, which requires a short walk from your cabin and is shared by the guests from all 4 units. (We also may have a portable toilet available on sight, placed strategically for all the units to share).
The kitchen in each unit is simple for numerous reasons: forest fires, rodents, and lack of running water. We have created a shared kitchen space in the Commons Lounge, where you will find a large fridge with your personal shelf space; a 3 burner propane stove; an oven; a sink, and all the cooking utensils/accessories you may need. There are plenty of seating/dining/working spaces if you want to take advantage of the WIFI and AC power. There is also an outdoor BBQ grill available near the commons lounge for all your grilling needs.
Being in the mountains, we share the space with beautifully Instagrammable animals such as deer, elk, and bear. All that said, bugs, flies, and the occasional mouse might drop by to say hello too. We do our ABSOLUTE BEST (fly tape, traps, poison, ancient Blackfoot Indian chants) to make sure you won’t see them. However, If even the prospect of the sight or sound of the occasional bug or mouse puts a burr under your saddle, we kindly suggest that you book a chain hotel in the big city of Missoula.
Shared Guest Access
All guests have 24/7 access to the Commons Lounge, where you’ll have access to a refrigerator, stove/oven, seating/dining spaces, the Internet, 110v AC (where each unit has solar panels and 12v DC – perfect for your USB chargeable devices) electricity and information about western Montana.
Our shared hot tub is a 2 seater unit that is available on a daily sign up board in 1-hour increments. If there are no other guests signed up, feel free to use it until you turn into a prune!
Enjoy the gorgeous sunsets and/or starry nights at guest favorite shared Fire Pit. We love joining our guests in sharing travel stories, brewskis or meals while petting pups and capturing sunsets together.
We are pet-friendly (2 fluffies max per cabin) but we require a $25 pet cleaning fee (per pet) that we will send after your initial booking. Your bestie will love to explore our 100 acres of forest wilderness.
