The Rhythm Here

At The Hohnstead, we prioritize the sound of the wind over the glow of a screen. Whether you are stargazing from a mechanical wall in the Stargazer or seeking a pet-friendly forest escape in the Ranch Hand, our property is a sanctuary from the noise and the screens. These aren't just Montana cabin rentals; they are hand-built portals to reconnect to nature and to each other.

Alla and Garrett and The Hohnstead Glamping Cabins near Missoula, Montana

Built and hosted by us (Alla and Garrett)

Fifteen years ago, this was little more than off-grid land in the Montana woods.

Since then, we've built each cabin by hand, hosted hundreds of guests, and slowly shaped The Hohnstead into the quiet retreat it is today. Before all of that, we were university teachers (with zero construction experience) living on the other side of the world in South Korea.

How we got from there to here is a story we're still amazed by ourselves.

What Our Guests Are Saying

  • This was an amazingly beautiful unplugged stay at this awesome A-frame. It was so peaceful and secluded, and it was the absolute best way to get away from the craziness of everyday and have a screen-free vacation for once! The hosts are incredibly friendly and welcoming and also gave us plenty of space to feel as if we were the only people around! 11/10 would recommend!

    — Miles

  • I cannot say enough about this Montana place, it was friendly, welcoming, well thought out, peaceful, and amazing. I love nature and after backpacking, this felt like a magical mansion! The hosts Alla and Garrett were so friendly, very genuine and accommodating and also had great humor! They definitely felt like friends instead of hosts. We stayed at the blind, the roof is clear. You can literally watch the stars from the coziness of your bed!

    — Carrie

  • We loved the whole place! It is 100 percent true Montana glamping, we saw lots of wildlife, enjoyed the peace of a quiet evening, and had the greatest ability to go adventure and come back to the cozy cabin! Anya, our pup, was so comfortable being up there and also enjoyed her time lounging out on the deck! I will be recommending Garrett and Alla's Hohnstead to my family and friends! P.s. great kombutcha!

Common Curiosities

  • Unlike a typical Missoula hotel, we prioritize 'Silence First.' Our handcrafted cabins (like the A-frame, The Blind, or The Stargazer) offer stargazing walls and a chance to disconnect—no TVs or noisy hallways here.

  • We are tucked into 100 acres of quiet forest, just 25 minutes from the heart of Missoula, 15 minutes from the KettleHouse Amphitheater, and 35 minutes from MSO. It is close enough to the city for a local beer, but far enough to hear the wind in the pines.

  • Absolutely. We believe a nature getaway is only complete when the whole family is included, which is why we have no breed or size restrictions. We’ve welcomed everyone from Baxter the Greyhound to tiny Chihuahuas to our 100-acre Missoula retreat. To keep things simple, we charge a single small pet fee for your entire stay rather than a nightly rate. We allow a maximum of two pets per cabin, and we simply ask that they are well-behaved around humans and other dogs to protect the "silence first" experience for all our guests.

  • Absolutely. We designed our resort as a "digital sanctuary" to help you unplug from the noise of constant notifications. While we have Wi-Fi in the communal Commons area for essentials, our unique cabins are intentionally off-grid, allowing you to trade screen time for the rhythmic sounds of the Montana forest.

  • To keep our footprint light, we share a centrally located outdoor restroom, solar showers, and a two-seater hot tub (available by sign-up for private soaking). The Commons serves as our communal kitchen and lounge—a place to gather before retreating back to the silence of your own cabin.

  • Yes. With 100 acres and five handcrafted cabins, we are an ideal setting for intimate group retreats or a creative unplug. Whether you’re hosting a wellness workshop or a small team reset, our "Silence First" philosophy provides the mental clarity needed for deep connection and inspired work.
